The month of May is just around the corner, and with it comes the Mother's Day, a holiday whose purpose is to pay tribute to the figure of mothers. The first Sunday in May is the day chosen to commemorate her figure in Spain, Hungary, South Africa, Angola, Lithuania and Portugal. Other countries such as Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Peru, the United States, Australia, Italy, Japan and Switzerland are waiting for another week, on May 9th, to praise the mother figure.
You are probably wondering ... What led to this holiday? The origins, although inaccurate, date back to about 2,100 years before Christ, in Ancient Egypt, when the goddess Isis, known as the "Great Mother Goddess", was already worshiped. Centuries later, in Ancient Greece, Rhea, mother of Olympus, was praised, while in the Roman Empire they worshiped Cybele, the Mother goddess, for three days a year, laying flowers on her. This is the first connection that we can find between our sector and that day.
Much later, in 1854, in Europe, Pope Pius IX established that the Christian community would dedicate December 8th to honor the figure of the Virgin Mary, marking the date as the day of the Immaculate Conception, thus giving rise to the Day of the Mother. But, decades later, in the 20th century, the United States moved the celebration of motherhood to May, which led the Spanish ecclesiastical authorities to follow the idea, thus separating the festivities of Mother's Day and the Immaculate Conception. While the former indicated the second Sunday in May, in Spain the first Sunday of the same month was chosen.
And which are the most suitable roses to give in this beautiful celebration? We make the following recommendations:
- Roses: Red roses, as we know well, are a symbol of love and passion, but they are also a sign of admiration and respect, ideal for a mother.
- Hydrangeas: The rose is synonymous with sweetness, romance and nostalgia. A perfect option to give to someone you love, especially at this time when they are in their maximum splendor.
- Lilies: They are associated with femininity, love and purity. They have an incredible fragrance and are very resistant.

El mes de mayo está a la vuelta de la esquina, y con él llega el Día de la Madre, una festividad cuya finalidad es rendir homenaje a la figura de las madres. El primer domingo de mayo es el día escogido para conmemorar su figura en España, Hungría, Sudáfrica, Angola, Lituania y Portugal. Otros países como Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Perú, Estados Unidos, Australia, Italia, Japón y Suiza aguardan una semana más, el 9 de mayo, para ensalzar la figura materna.
Es probable que os estéis preguntando… ¿Qué dio lugar a está festividad? Los orígenes, aunque inexactos, se remontan a unos 2.100 años antes de Cristo, en el Antiguo Egipto, cuando ya se adoraba a la diosa Isis, conocida como la "Gran diosa madre”. Siglos después, en la Antigua Grecia, se alababa a Rea, madre del Olimpo, mientras que en el Imperio Roman rendían culto durante tres días al año a Cibeles, la diosa Madre, depositándole flores. Ésta es la primera conexión que podemos encontrar entre nuestro sector y el señalado día.
Mucho más adelante, en 1854, en Europa, el Papa Pío IX estableció que la comunidad cristiana dedicaría el 8 de diciembre a homenajear la figura de la Virgen María, señalando la fecha como día de la Inmaculada Concepción, dando así origen al Día de la Madre. Pero, décadas más tarde, en el siglo XX, Estados Unidos traslado la celebración de la maternidad al mes de mayo, lo que propició que las autoridades eclesiásticas españolas siguieran la idea, para separar así las festividades del Día de la Madre y la Inmaculada Concepción. Mientras los primeros señalaron el segundo domingo de mayo, en España se optó por el primer domingo del mismo mes.
¿Y cuáles son las rosas más adecuadas para regalar en ésta bonita celebración? Os hacemos las siguientes recomendaciones:
- Rosas: Las rojas, cómo bien conocemos, son símbolo del amor y la pasión, pero también son señal de admiración y respeto, idóneo para una madre.
- Hortensias: La rosa es sinónimo de dulzura, romance y nostalgia. Una opción perfecta para regalar a alguien a quien quieres, especialmente en ésta época que se encuentran en su máximo esplendor.
- Lirios: Se asocian a la feminidad, el amor y la pureza. Tienen una increíble fragancia y son muy resistentes.
